Student Reader Survey

Thank you for your help on the Global Chaucers project!

We are a  group of scholars interested in the ways students from around the world study Chaucer. To help us better understand what it’s like to study Chaucer today, we have developed three sets of questions:

(1) for students who read Chaucer ONLY in Middle English,

(2) for students who read Chaucer ONLY in either a non-Anglophone translation or a modernization into Present-Day English,

(3) for students who read Chaucer BOTH in (Middle or Present-Day) English and in a non-Anglophone translation.

No matter which survey you complete, we recommend focusing on one or two tales.

For each set of questions, we’ve provided many questions. Please select the questions that most interest you. We also encourage you to address issues that you find interesting but are not covered by the list. Tell us as little or as much as you’d like.  (Note: when you see the phrase “receiving language,” this refers to the language of the translation.)

When we refer to your answers in our research, you will be identified by only your initials.

Survey for Option 1: students who read Chaucer ONLY in Middle English.

Survey for Option 2: student who read Chaucer ONLY in either a non-Anglophone translation or a modernization into Present-Day English.

Survey for Option 3: students who read Chaucer in BOTH in (Middle or PDE) English and in a non-Anglophone translation.
