We learned this week about Marcin Ciura’s Sejm ptasi, a new translation into Polish of Chaucer’s The Parlement of Foules. Ciura, a computer programmer in Krakow, chose 16th-century Polish and a 13-syllable meter to give his translation a medieval feel. For those of you who can read Polish, here is the first stanza (crossing my fingers that the lines don’t merge):
Żywot tak krótki, kunsztu tak długie kształcenie,
Podboje tak gwałtowne, tak trudne starania,
Spadające tak prędko trwożne zachwycenie —
To wszystko zwę Miłością, która oszałamia
Mą świadomość przez swoje cudowne działania
Tak boleśnie zaiste, że gdy myślę o niej,
Tom bynajmniej niepewny: pływamli czy tonę.
